Afro Hair Studio wins dispute over cutting "white men's hair"

In this case, Abraham Berhe and his wife struggled to maintain their "Afro Hair Studio," which specialized in dreadlocks, hair extensions and cornrows. The conflict in this case is that their landlord, Coblenz Holdings, wanted them to restrict their services to not cutting "white men's" hair because the Afro Hair Salon's business would jeopardize another barbers' business in the building. When the Berhe's first signed their tenancy agreement, there were no restrictions as to not cut "white men's hair." As an end to their dispute, the Berhes family left the property in February 2011. Berhes was entitled to a total of $67,706.50 for materials used to renovate the premises, breach of contract and legal costs.

This post relates to law because:
Like all Canadian citizens, the Berhes family has a right to work hard and support themselves. Citizens should not be signing contracts to restrict certain ethnicities hair. I believe that competition between businesses are essential to our everyday lives. A business should not be required to limit themselves to one race or sex, people should not be treated as categories.

  2. This is really interesting, especially since cutting white people's hair would provide almost twice as much business!
