Woman charged for neglecting cat

A woman from Ontario is charged for neglecting her obese 12 year old cat. The cat was matted with feces and his skin was so irritated with open sore that it had to be put down. The sentence for animal abuse is "The maximum provincial sentence is two years in jail, a $60,000 fine and a lifetime ban on keeping animals."

Jail gangster beaten into a coma

Gangster Jesse John Margison was beaten to a coma while in prison. This is due to overcrowding and more gang-linked inmates. He sustained memory loss and many injuries. Margison was shocked about the outstanding offences. He is still not fit for a court hearing.

woman settles lawsuit over B.C. solitary confinement

Aboriginal BobbyLee Worm was segregated in solitary confinement and was treated illegally and inhumanely for 3.5 years. The lawsuit sparked attention to the unconstitutional practice of long team solitary confinement. Correctional Services of Canada said the protocol used to put Worm in confinement would be ended.

I did not know that you could be put in solitary confinement for so long. This article is related to Law 12 because it shows how controversial the system can be, treating prisoners illegally.

Nanny forced to work 16-hour days

Filipino nanny Leticia Sarmiento testified at a human trafficking trial that involved her one of her employers, Oi Ling Nicole Huen. Sarmiento had no idea she was only in the country with a 6 month working Visa which was long expired. According to Sarmiento, she was working for the employers as a live-in nanny since 2008. Sarmiento took care for their three children. A heated event occurred when Huen told her to feed a child some milk, water and bread and when Sarmiento served soy milk, Huen threw the soy milk and she started cleaning. Huen took the towel and threw it in Sarmiento's face, telling her to "get out." She then called 911 and asked for help.
The idea of this is sickening. I know how hard people try to get out of the Philippines to work abroad and make a living of their own. For this to happen to anyone is actually terrible. This relates to Law 12 because it relates to an illegal topic, trafficking.

B.C. Gangster gets moved to lower security prison

The leader of the Independent Soldiers gang claimed that his Charter rights were violated. After appealing to the B.C. Supreme Court, Jayme Russell was able to transfer back to a lower security jail. Prior to the appeal he served a seven year sentence for two trafficking convictions.
This article relates to Law 12 because we were recently discussing how Charter rights get violated. I wonder if there are more punishments than just a sentence to jail.. What are the differences in a high security and low security jail other than the security?..

Man sentenced for killing White Rock man and punching victim's son while he called 911

Allan Simpson Wood, 39, pleaded guilty to drunk driving and assault. On July 19, 2010, Bryan McCron and his son Connor were delivering newspapers while Wood was traveling twice the speed limit. Wood then collided into McCron and destroyed his car, leaving Connor injured but able to contact the ambulance. In anger, Wood got out of the car to check the incident and pushed Connor up against the Toyota and punched him in the stomach while he was on the phone. Wood is sentenced to two years in prison and subject to t a 5-year driving prohibition.

I feel that the actions of Wood are disgusting. He should be put in jail for more than two years, especially for harming a teenager who was trying to save himself and his father - his best friend. This relates to law 12 because it deals with sentencing and the criminal law.

Nunavut attempted murder trail date

In May 2010, James Joanasie Newkingnak was charged with attempted murder. Newkingnak attacked Jeremy Nookiguak with an axe in Nunavut, causing permanent brain damage. With the court date set on November 7th, James is ready to plead guilty to aggravated assault rather than attempted murder. The court proceedings were delayed for psychiatric information on intermittent explosive disorder.
It's astonishing to see people plead guilty. I feel like it's a responsible thing to do. What caught my attention in this case that he only has a one day trial as opposed to the trials that go on for months.
